It's my parties...

Have I mentioned how amazing my hubby is lately?  This guy went all out for my big 3-0!  Not only did I have one surprise party with my Chicago friends, but after arriving in KC on my birthday he surprised me with another party with the Mott's and the Heinrich's!  It was so much fun!  Here are a few pics from my parties:)
The Chicago Surprise...Monroe and I are looking pretty rough.  It was a lazy Sunday and I hadn't taken a shower yet!  That's the only complaint I have.  If you are going to have a surprise party for your wife, MAKE her take a shower beforehand!!!
Our Chicago friends!  Well, actually we were missing Kelsey and the Nudds!

The KC Suprise...A fun group of friends at CPK in the Plaza.  After eating, we shopped around the Plaza and then were going to go ice skating, but because of super cold temps, we decided to watch a movie instead.

Christmas Came Early

Sending out and receiving Christmas Cards was and is one of my favorite parts of Christmastime.  I love getting pictures and letters from my family and friends.  It's one of the few times people send "snail mail" anymore and that makes it even more special.

This year I couldn't decide what I wanted to do for Christmas Cards.  That is until I received the most amazing flyer in the mail from Shutterfly.  Inside they had the most unique photocards I have seen around.  They have so many that I love, I can hardly decide.  Here are a few of my favorites... (Imagine them with pics of our family, of course!)

Be sure to check out their website so you can find some special cards for yourself.  Not only are there hundreds to choose from, they are super affordable, too!  Does it get any better?  Well, to answer my own question, "Yes"!  They also have calendars and photo books!  They both make amazing Christmas gifts for parents and grandparents.

I was so excited because they offered a special deal for bloggers!  (Thanks Angie for sharing!!!)  I'll make sure to let you know how they turn out!  Merry Christmas...a little early:)

Love,

Steph

An Uninvited Guest

This past weekend we celebrated my sweet little nephew, Max Lincoln's, first birthday.

It was a great day full of food, fun and friends...but also, the flu.  Somewhere in that party lurked the icky stomach flu that is picking off each of the guests one at a time.

It hit Mark and I on Monday as we were leaving work.  We both looked at each other and said in harmony, "I don't feel so good."

We arrived home and it got progressively worse.  I will spare you the details, but it was bad...real bad, for both of us.  We were so thankful that Monroe seemed to be cheerful and feeling great.  We put her to bed around 8:00 pm and we climbed into our own bed soon after.   Around 8:30, I heard Monroe start crying.  I went to see if she just needed her binky, but as I was feeling around in her bed for it, I felt something gross.  I flipped on the lights and found her covered in throw-up.  Now that I am a parent, I can think of nothing worse than having my little person sick!!!  It's horrible because you feel so helpless.

The two of us set up camp on towels outside of the bathroom, while Mark was in bed or in the restroom (he was too weak to do much).  Monroe and I continued throwing up in unison for the next few hours until I ended up calling our moms and they both recommended that we take Monroe to the emergency room to make sure she didn't get dehydrated.

So we packed up our sick little group and headed to the hospital.  We must have looked pretty pitiful...actually, I know we did, because I saw the ER doc that treated us on Wednesday at work and he said just that, "You guys looked pretty pitiful."

After what seemed like an eternity, we finally arrived back home around 2:30 am.  We each fell into bed and although I was up a few times during the night, we were doing much better by morning.  Definitely not 100% better, but better.  By the evening we were able to eat a light dinner, although we regretted it after.

We went back to work on Wednesday and now it all just seems like a bad dream.  I know that it wasn't just a bad dream, because I had to clean the house yesterday and it took me ALL DAY!  The place looked like a very horrible battle had been fought there.  Apparently, when WE get sick, we go absolutely insane and use every blanket, towel, piece of clothing we have ever worn, plate, dish & bowl and leave it on the ground. Ugh!!!

So anyway, today I am thankful for our health.  We just had to suffer through that madness for 24 hours, I can't imagine what it must be like to be terminally ill.  We are very blessed.  I am also thankful for a clean house.

On Monday, Melissa and I are taking Monroe and Max and heading to Kansas City for Thanksgiving.  Mark, Mike and Mason will follow on Tuesday.  I am so excited to see all of our family.  It's going to be an extra special Thanksgiving because the Mott's (Andrea & Carlos) and the Heinrich's (Tasha, Bill & Colton) will be in KC, as well.  It will be amazing to see some of our closest friends.  I couldn't be happier!!!

I hope everyone has an amazing Thanksgiving!  I will keep each of you in my prayers for safe travels and a blessed holiday!

In Honor of Thanksgiving

With Thanksgiving upon us, I think it's only right to repost this video.  As many of you know, I have a love (bordering on obsession) with As Seen On TV products.  My friends indulge me and sometimes surprise me with such gifts.  In fact, at the Harvest Party, our friends, The Brown's, brought me Leaf Mitts...the perfect fall gift.  So anyway, here is one of my favorite products, Tater Mitts.  They were given to me on my 29th birthday by Tasha.  This video was taken last  November when we were still living in Florida.  I hope you enjoy the video and run right out and get yourself a pair of these pretties.

It's been a long time...

So things have been super busy the last few weeks.  I've felt like I haven't had any time to update the ole' blog, but I finally realized that I need to make time.  It's on my list!!!  I need to make it a priority.  I am still very excited about my list.  I am finding that it's always in the back of my mind and it is truly helping me to get things done.  The two things on the list that I have been focusing on lately, are

# 6 Tell at least one person a day I will pray for them, and do it
#11 Call one of my friends every week

I am really horrible at staying in touch with people.  Facebook has made it a lot easier, but nothing is better for catching up then a nice phone call.  I have been really taking the initiative to call a friend (more than one) every week.  It feels so good.

This next week I am going to focus on the calendar goal.  I really want to get my life a lot more organized.  My mom is so great at always having a little calendar with her for all of her upcoming events.  I'll let you know how that goes.

So, to catch you up...
        *   We had both sets of our parents come visit in the last few weeks.  It was so nice.
Monroe had a blast being spoiled by them:)
        *   Mark celebrated his 29th birthday
        *   Monroe was a cute little 50's girl for the Fall Fest at Church
        *   We had a wonderful Harvest party at our house.  It included yummy food, a cornhole
tournament, and 27 friends and tons of fun.

Here are a few pics from the last few weeks...

Watch out 30, I'm coming for you

As I approach my 30th birthday, I am so happy to say that I don’t feel dread or sadness over getting older. When I really take the time to look at my life, I am so overwhelmed by the blessings God has given me.

1) I have the most amazing husband, and although like many marriages, we had a rough spot, we have put God in the center of our lives and he has renewed us. I couldn’t ask for a better partner and friend.

2) After years of wondering if I would be able to have a baby, I now have the sweetest little girlie to call my own. She has definitely changed us for the better and fills our lives with joy.

3) I have the best family ever! They are each so supportive, generous and special. I look forward to every minute I get to spend with them.

4) God has lead me to three different careers and I have found fulfillment in each one. I absolutely loved being a teacher and will always consider myself one. Recruiting came along right at the perfect time and it helped me learn so many skills that I use in my new job of Volunteer Coordinator.

5) I have some of the loveliest and most beautiful friends around, inside and out!

One of my friends from college, Misty, is taking part in a 1001 days project. This is a list of things that you try to complete in 1001 days. Some of them are relatively easy and super fun, and some of them take a lot of work and really require some planning. I was inspired by her list, and although I am not going to put a date on it, because some of the things I am choosing are a little more abstract, I am all in. Hide your food

Seriously, Monroe is going to eat us out of house and home.  She is literally eating everything in sight.  This is a look at her Sunday Breakfast, which I can't hate on because I love a big Sunday breakfast myself...

1- 6 oz bottle of soy milk
6- mini pancakes
2- pieces of banana bread
1- bowl of grapes, raspberries & strawberries
2- morningstar breakfast links
1- banana

For the last few days, I can't seem to keep her full.  I feel like I am constantly feeding her and I'm starting to  worry that she's eating too much.   There have been a few times now that she has eaten more than me!  I don't want to be that mom on Maury Povich with the 200lb toddler!!!

Hopefully, this is just a growth spurt!

Done and Done

So, I have been working on a quilt for Monroe for a very, very long time.  Yes, you may recall that I started long before she was even born.  Well today, two months after her first birthday, I have finally finished!  I can't believe it took me this long.  It's a tie quilt so it really should have only taken me a few days.  Why is it, when you are doing something for yourself, it always gets put on the back burner?

When I gave it to Monroe today, I wasn't expecting much of a reaction, but to my surprise, she got so excited.  She kept laughing at the birdies and rolling all around on it.  She really seemed to love it:)  It was so sweet.   Here are a few pictures:

My little chick

It's been a while since I last wrote.  Mark was in Florida all last week and I had my big event at work, so I was beyond busy being a working mommy.  I truly don't know how single parents do it.  I know I've said it before, but it's so nice having a partner who contributes so much.  I am sooo lucky and I become even more aware of it when he's gone.

Yesterday, I somehow convinced Mark to go with me to Joann's.  I just had to run in and get something to finish up Monroe's quilt, but, like always, I ended up finding more than I had planned on.   I got some great seersucker to make Mark a scarf.  Here he is a picture of my handsome hubby sporting it...

Well, I better run.  I've got laundry to fold and I have work tomorrow.  Love to you all!

Falling into Fall

I'm a huge lover of all things Fall...the leaves, the pumpkins, the briskness, pumpkin spice lattes, all of it.   You can count on me to have my fall decor up as soon as the leaves start to change.  (Maybe even a few days/weeks early)

For me, Fall has become a time of reflection and thanksgiving. I just can't get over what an incredible God I serve.  A God that has brought me through the toughest of times and blessed me with the most amazing family and friends.  I'm just so very happy.

Why is it then, that I still struggle with contentment?  For example, I have a ALOT of shoes, I mean ALOT.  It's actually too embarrassing to say how many I have.  But, I swear, if I go shopping I see a dozen other pairs that I feel that I absolutely need.  Luckily, I've learned to restrain myself, but I still find this troubling.  I live in a lovely home, but I am always looking for something bigger and better.  WHY?!  My new prayer is for contentment.  I have been blessed with so much.  I am going to strive to enjoy each and every thing I have and stop always wanting more.

So, a few years ago, Mark and I invested in bikes.  Since Monroe was born, they haven't even been touched!  Well, that's not exactly true, I moved mine out the way the other day when I was getting my fall decor out of the garage:)  Periodically, I look on craigslist for a bike stroller and this afternoon I hit the jackpot!  Some people were selling theirs in the next town over for a very fair price.  I offered even less, and they accepted.  We picked it up earlier and I am so excited to take Monroe on her first bike ride tomorrow.  Yay!  I'll be sure to post some pictures.

Mom Murrill dropped in for the night last night!  She was on her way to her 40 year high school reunion and needed a place to crash.   It was great to see her, even if only for a few hours.

Well, I better get to sleep.  Sadly, I don't have any new pictures to share.  I need to charge my camera battery, but for some reason it has been an impossible task for me to complete.  Maybe I will go do that now.   Have a relaxing night!

Something from Nothing

I've had a hard time coming up with something for Monroe to wear for Halloween.  I really didn't want to spend much money, so I decided to give myself a challenge.  I had to come up with a costume for her without going to the store at all.  I looked through magazines and tried to get ideas.  I found one that I thought was so cute and very doable with what I had around the house...a fifties girl.

Last night I got started and made her a poodle skirt and a little belt.  I am pairing it with a black long sleeved shirt, a little scarf of mine and her black mary-janes.  I tried it on her tonight and it fits perfectly.  I am so excited because it is so cute!  I think she will look adorable at the Hinsdale Church Fall Festival and it didn't cost me a thing!

Things have been tough around our house.  Mark and Monroe have both had some severe stomach issues.  I've been pumping Rosie full of liquids and she seems to be feeling better.  She has a horrible diaper rash, though.  She's never had a problem with diaper rash before, so this is very new to me.  She cries and cries when I change her diaper.  My mom recommended using a warm washcloth instead of wipes and that seems to be better.  Tonight I gave her a warm bath with baking soda and let her play without her diaper on for over an our (both things prescribed by the internet).  Hopefully, that gets the healing process started.  I just feel so bad seeing her in pain.  On a happier note, she LOVED not wearing a diaper.  It was so funny to see her naked little bootie wandering all of the house.  So cute, but I have to admit, a little nerve wracking.  I just knew I would find little puddles around, but luckily she had no accidents...whew.

My poor Mark, on the other hand.  He is super sick.  He looks really pale and has very little energy.  I feel so horrible for him.

Tonight I was able to chat with one of my besties, Tasha.  It was so WONDERFUL to talk with her.  I had almost forgotten how much fun we have when we talk.  Our parenting ideas are very much the same, as well as our personalities, so we always have tons to talk about.  Oh, how I miss her!!!!!!

Mark is leaving next week for Florida.  I wanted to go with him SOOO bad, but it just happened to fall on the main event I am helping with for the hospital, the Fall Festival of Flavors.  I really am just going to have to figure out a time to fly down there soon.  There are at least four babies that I really want to hold and kiss on down there!

Well, I better run.  Love you all.

Friday Nights Make Me Happy

Ah, to be home in my jammies with my family on a cool Friday night in October.  Does it get any better?  I think not.

We've had a busy last few days.  I worked on Thursday and it was NUTS!  I am helping with an event that has been consuming all of my time, to say the very least.  I am so glad that our new assistant started when she did.  She is getting done a lot of the little things that I just don't have time for right now.

As soon as work was done, I had to rush home and change and head to Maria's for Jen's baby shower.  It was so much fun.  Melissa, Maria and Yvonne hosted it and it was so great.  The decorations were ADORABLE!  It definitely had Melissa's touch.  That girl has mad decorating skills.  If you haven't read her blog, you should.  Here's a link.  Hope you don't mind me sharing, Sis:)  The food was so yummy (they ordered in from Maggiano's) and the cake was incredible.  The same girl that made Monroe's smash cake made it.

I have to admit something very sad...I hate three pieces of chocolate cake yesterday!  I had some at lunch, then my boss brought me some Portillo's cake and then I had a piece at the shower.  I really have to watch it.  I am definitely going to take a break from sweets for awhile.  They really don't even sound good to me right now.  I am sure they will in a few minutes, but right now, I could go without.

This morning I was awoken by the mix of Monroe crying and the worst smell ever.  When I entered her room, I was greeted by not only a very unpleasant odor, but an unpleasant sight.  Poor thing had had the biggest blowout of all time.  It had traveled up her back and into her hair!!!!  It was major.  After a good cleaning, she came to sleep with us.  She is the biggest bed hog of all time.  She usually uses my face as a pillow and Mark's head as a foot rest.  You gotta love her:)

Today we ran errands and cleaned the house.  Mark played golf with Kenneth, Mike, and Brandon.  They seemed to have a great time and we all met for dinner at Sweet Tomatoes.  It is a perfect place for all of us with our kiddos.  They can be loud and make a huge mess and no one seems the wiser.

Now, I am home and I really just want to sleep.  But before I go, I had to show you something that totally and utterly made my Friday...

Yes, that is another surprise box from my mom!  This time Monroe hit the jackpot.  Nana and Papa went nuts in Branson and got her lots of adorable goodies!  So cute.

We loved every last item, but were most excited about the replacement skinny jeans.  I have been squeezing Rosie into a size 6-9 months pair, just because they are just so darn cute.  It is great to have some that actually fit her again!  Thanks Mom and Dad for thinking of us.  Your generosity is truly a blessing.

Really, Martha...Really?

I don't have to work today!  I am so relieved and so thankful.  I have to work tomorrow, but let's just focus on the present!;)

As I was getting ready this morning I was watching the "Today" show.  I love everyone on it and it just makes me happy to watch in the mornings.  I especially love when Martha Stewart comes on to cook because she is just so nuts.  Today she shared that she has never, in her whole life, had delivery pizza!!!  Meredith Vieira just looked at Martha like "Are you kidding me?"  Then Martha asked Meredith if she ever had.  Meredith said, "Uh, yeah",  clearly annoyed.  I found this to be a hilarious exchange.  Martha is on another planet:)

In other news, last night Mark ran upstairs to get something and Monroe and I were hanging out in the basement.  She all of a sudden became very quiet and I didn't see her anymore.  I went over to the stairs and there she was, almost to the top!  She has never been interested in the stairs before and all of a sudden she's climbed to the top.  Now with her increased mobility I am going to have to be a lot more careful!

I don't think I've mentioned on my blog my fascination with Polygamy.  That sounds bad.  I am not interested in it for myself, I am just so fascinated by the people and the lifestyle.   It all started after watching a 48 hours Investigates episode a few years ago.  I've been intrigued ever sense.  I picked up a book the other day about the beginnings of Mormonism and Warren Jeff's, the former Prophet of the Fundamentalist Ladder Day Saints Church.  It was really eye opening for me.  I really had no idea everything that was going on in Utah for so long.  So anyway, when I saw the commercials for the new show, Sister Wives on TLC, I was very excited.  It premiered on Sunday night and the Meharry's just happened to be here.  It worked out great, because Nicole has the same fascination as I do.  It was the craziest show I have ever seen.  There are three wives and at the end of the episode the husband told the family (13 kids) that he would be taking another wife, who he has been courting for the last few months.  Isn't that bizarre?!!!  Anyway, I kept wondering how they were not being prosecuted since polygamy is illegal.  Well, Mark sent me a CNN article yesterday that said they are now being investigated by the authorities.   I really wonder how things will turn out.  Pretty interesting stuff.  I don't know why I'm telling you all this, but these are the goings-on in my mind:)

Monroe and I just got back from a lovely day at the Cosley Zoo in Wheaton.  What an amazing place!  We went with Nicole and Ezra and Melissa and the boys.  We all had a blast.  It was so relaxing and serene and it only costs $3.00 for adults.  Kids get in free.  Monroe seemed the most intrigued by the chickens and the goats. Here are a few pics of the day...

I love this little person!
Group photo..It took a few tries, but it turned out great!

When I pulled up to the house, I noticed a package on the front steps.  I don't know about you, but seeing a package on the porch is probably the best feeling in the whole world.  I get so excited.  It doesn't matter if I already know what's in the box.  It's still great.  It could be drain cleaner and I would still get that feeling!  So imagine my surprise when I wasn't expecting anything and there was a package AND it had my name on it!!!!  It was from my mom and inside I found the best things ever...

Thanks, Mom!  I love them.  You are the best!

Are your ears ringing?

As far as days go, this was a good one.  We had a lot on the agenda and were able to get most on the list crossed off.

Monroe and I decided it would be fun to visit Petco.  I wanted to see what she would think of all of the animals.  As suspected, she LOVED them.  She was especially intrigued by the birds.  She just laughed and laughed at them.

She also really enjoyed the fish.  I guess you could call Petco the poor man's Shedd Aquarium.  At this point, Monroe doesn't seem to know the difference, so I will save the $30 and continue going to Petco as long as I can get away with it.

After leaving Petco, we went next door to Bed, Bath & Beyond.  I have been looking everywhere for one of these:

Lucky for me, they had them there.  I don't know why I am so excited about this cup, but I definitely am.  I really need a special cup to drink water in, or I won't drink it.  A straw also makes drinking water more exciting for me.  It's the little things that get me going:)

After running a few more errands, we came home, and I did some crafting.  I saw a tutorial for making the cutest earrings using vintage buttons.  Now, I don't have my ears pierced, but a lot of my friends do, and I thought it would be fun to make a few for them.  I ended up going a little nuts!!!  I can't wait to give them away.  I just love them.

These are some I am sending to a special friend.

This is a close-up of my favorites

In other news, I kind of splurged on a purse earlier this week.  I saw it a few days ago and I couldn't get it out of my mind.  I loved the size and the ruffles.  It was perfect.  I had to go back and get it.  Now I said splurge, but really it wasn't a splurge for most people.  It was actually a very good deal and I am so pleased with it.

Mark and I went on a little dinner date tonight.  It was so nice.  Yes, our chaperone was there, too.  She quietly ate bread and salad and really didn't make a peep.

Tonight were the season premieres of many of our favorite shows.  So we kind of just vegged out and watched TV.  I did some more crafting, but other than that, our evening has been super low key.

So, that was our day in a nutshell.  Hope things are going well in your neck of the woods.  Miss you all and love you!
